Jeanne Louise Calment had the longest verified lifespan of anyone on earth, living 122 years (died 1997). She is the only person confirmed to have lived 120 years.
She outlived her husband, daughter and grandson and - having reached 90 years old with no heirs - sold her apartment on a contingency contract for a 2,500 franc monthly fee for the rest of her life. The buyer, André-François Raffray, ended up paying more than $180,000 - more than double the apartment’s value. She lived on her own until she was 110, but a small cooking fire forced her into a nursing home.
Jeanne took up fencing at age 85 and rode a bicycle until she was 100. She was no health fanatic. She poured olive oil on all her food, ate nearly 1kg of chocolate every week, and smoked and drank moderately until she was 117.
